OUR NAME AND HISTORY
Logan Wildcats
When the town that is now known as Logan incorporated in 1853, it was renamed "Aracoma" after the Shawnee chief Cornstalk's daughter, who had been killed by settlers in the area in 1780. The city was renamed "Logan" in 1907 after the Mingo leader, Chief Logan.
The Logan County Wildcats were a company of the 36th Virginia Infantry comprised of about 300 men from Logan County, WV in the early 1900's.
Logan High School was established in 1911 and was located on East Stratton Street.
Our current campus was opened in 1957. The school campus sits on Hatfield Island, at the confluence of the Guyandotte River and Island Creek. The island is shared with an elementary school, middle school, and the town's public library.
In 1957, The Logan County Commission and the Logan Board of Education worked jointly to construct the Logan Senior High School, the field house - now titled the Willie Akers Arena- and the athletic fields.
